The Influence of Peer Pressure on Teen Substance Use
Teen substance use has become a major problem in the society today peer pressure being
the main cause of it. Teenagers face social pressure as they try fitting in certain groups and being
accepted by their fellow peers. During this stage they face vulnerability and end up making poor
decisions some of them being; getting involved in substance abuse. Most of the teenagers are
introduced to substance abuse by their friends and their need to fit in certain groups playing a
major role in that. Since peer pressure effects teen decisions it plays a major role in the increase o
rate of teen substance use.
Teens are mostly vulnerable to peer pressure since their brain is still developing most
probably the areas responsible for decision making and self control which makes them more
exposed to risky behaviors (Steinberg, 2014).During adolescence, the need for being accepted
socially and fitting in in certain groups becomes very strong. This increases high chances of
imitating and copying what their fellows are doing even the bad and harmful behaviors
( Prinstein & Brechwald,2017).Survey also shows that exposure to peers who use this drug
substances is one of the strongest predictors of early drug experimentation among teenagers
(National Institute on Drug abuse,2020). All these social ,developmental and environmental
factors increase of rate of drug usage among peers.
