Moral Status Case Study
A Christian view of the nature of human persons and compatible theory of moral status
Humanity is a wondrous essential nature. Christians believe that they are created in the
image and likeness of God (Stahl and Kilner, 2017). As such, most Christians regard human life
as a sacred phenomenon. Such a development means that the moral vision of society is greatly
impacted by the dignity of the human person. Furthermore, Christians perceive that human
personhood is present through the unification of corporeal and spiritual aspects in human
existence (Stahl and Kilner, 2017).
In my view, the Christian perspective of the nature of human persons is compatible with
the theory based on sentience. This theory warrants awareness and cognitive ability (Beauchamp
and Childress, 2013). The intrinsic dignity is the value placed on human beings by the account of
them being human beings (Mitchell, 2014. Thus, the interplay between the Christian perspective
and sentience theory of moral status reveals a sort of consensus on the level of respect that
should be accorded to human life. They relate in the sense that both of them acknowledge human
attribution rather than created/conferred human choices.
Moral status determination theories
Jessica
Jessica uses both the cognitive properties concept and the theory of sentience. She
employs the theory based on sentience to determine the value of the fetus. The fact that Jessica
regards all life as sacred (Case Study: Fetal Abnormality, 2015), underlines some of the critical
elements of sentience. Also, the fact that she is torn between career development and saving the
abnormal fetus shows that she also subscribes to the theory based on cognitive properties which
stress an in-depth assessment of a situation.
