, Objectives
1. To study Operation of a Steam Boiler (Fundamentals).
2. To study relationship between Temperature and pressure.
Theory
Marcet Boiler has been developed for investigating the relationship between the pressure and
temperature of saturated steam, in equilibrium with water, at all pressures between 0-10 bars an ideal
gas can be characterized by three state variables: absolute pressure (P), volume (V), and absolute
temperature (T). The relationship between them may be deduced from kinetic theory and is called
the ideal Gas law. The ideal Gas Law is expressed by following equation.
PV = nRT
Where,
P = Absolute pressure, (kPa)
V = Volume, (m³)
n = Amount of substance, (moles)
R = Ideal gas constant, (kJ/kg.K)
T = Absolute temperature, (K)
If a gas behaves exactly as the ideal gas laws would predict it to behave in terms of volume,
pressure, mules, and temperature, then the gas is said to be an ideal gas. On the other hand, the gas
deviates from Ideal Gas behavior, then the gas is said to be acting like a real gas. When energy
increases within water, the increasing of activities among the molecules enables the increase in the
number of molecule escape from the surface until an equilibrium state is reached. The state of
equilibrium depends on the pressure between the water surface and steam. At lower pressure, the
molecules become easier leaving the water surface while less energy required in achieving the state
of equilibrium (boiling point). The temperature As heat is added further, the temperature & pressure
of steam goes on increasing. The generated steam can be released through water filling port by the
opening Valve V-1. After experimentation, the drain valve at the bottom of the vessel can be used to
drain the water from boiler. The drain valve can be accessed by opening the door on the back side. A
bourdon tube pressure gauge is fitted to measure the steam temperature in boiler & a thermocouple
is used to measure the steam temperature. The boiler is fitted with a safety relief valve which
releases the steam to atmosphere when pressure of steam rises above 16 Bar.where equilibrium
occurs at a given pressure level is called saturated temperature. A plot of Temperature of steam (T)
Vs Pressure (P) gives us the relationship between temperature & pressure. As heat is added further,
the temperature & pressure of steam goes on increasing. The generated steam can be released
through water filling port by the opening Valve V-1. After experimentation, the drain valve at the
bottom of the vessel can be used to drain the water from boiler. The drain valve can be accessed by
opening the door on the back side. A bourdon tube pressure gauge is fitted to measure the steam
temperature in boiler & a thermocouple is used to measure the steam temperature. The boiler is fitted
with a safety relief valve which releases the steam to atmosphere when pressure of steam rises above
16 Bar
