The document is an academic paper detailing the final two phases of the psychological consultation process: the Intervention Phase and the Disengagement Phase. The paper uses the hypothetical scenario of a consultant working with a cancer center to illustrate these concepts. 1. Intervention Phase Definition: This phase involves the consultant (consultee) defining and implementing action plans or strategies to help the client (consultant) solve a defined problem or achieve specific goals. Guiding Factors: The consultee's choice of intervention must be guided by several factors to ensure appropriateness and effectiveness: Culture: The intervention must be modified to conform to the organization's unique culture, beliefs, values, and norms. Financial Resources: The chosen plan must be cost-effective and financially viable for the organization. Consultee Skills: The consultant should select strategies that align with their own skills and competencies for effective execution. Client Preferences: The client's needs and preferences must be incorporated, and they must be involved throughout the process. Example: The paper refers to interventions like targeted and tailored interventions on colorectal cancer screening used in a cost-effectiveness study. 2. Disengagement Phase Definition: This phase marks the official termination of the consultation engagement when the client organization has achieved full self-sufficiency in handling the project. Goal: The primary objective is to transition the project's ownership to the client, ensuring they have the independence and ability to run the project by themselves. Post-Disengagement Support: Even after termination, the consultee must design a follow-up plan in collaboration with the client (e.g., the cancer center management). The follow-up details the frequency of check-ins to monitor progress, adjust strategies, and offer further advice to maintain or improve output. Follow-ups may be on a need-by-need basis as the client gains control and requires less support over time.

Intervention and Disengagement Phases in Consultation

Intervention phase

The consultation phase in consultation process involves the consultee defining action
plans or strategies that will help the consultant solve the defined problems, or achieve
specified goals. However, it’s important that the consultee remains guided by a raft of factors
to ensure aptness to the client’s needs and preferences. It’s in fact important that the consultee
involves the client throughout the process to ensure s/he is adequately acquainted with
client’s preferences, which facilitates aligning with these preferences. The choice of an
intervention set depends of a variety of factors, which include the following:

Culture-culture is a term referring to dynamic human facets, which include behaviors,
beliefs, values, behavioral expectations, norms and other definite codes that define the way of
life of a people Cuevas, O’Brien and Saha (2017). Every organization, community, or
individuals ascribes to unique culture, which defines how things are done. Therefore, even
after identifying the most viable solutions to the problem, the consultee must borrow from the
organization’s culture and choose those that most conform to this culture. Even the most
promising interventions must be modified to incorporate important cultural facets of the
organization and those of the community targeted by the organization.

Cost-Cost in this context refers to the expenditures on resources required to acquire and
implement the intervention (Lairson et al., 2008). A reliable intervention should offer long-
term value for money and be cost-effective compared to other potential interventions. The
consultee must demonstrate to the client the value for a chosen intervention using cost-benefit
analysis, that estimates the cost of achieving a unit of desired outcome using various enlisted
possible interventions.

Available resources-The organization can only implement at its disposal, and not what
it will struggle to acquire. Time could also be of essence, which necessitates the
implementation of simpler, available interventions. The financial capacity of the organization
may also necessitate the implementation of interventions that favor the prevailing financial
capability of the organization. Consultation with stakeholders is therefore, essential to ensure
interventions align with convenience factor.
