Overpopulation: Causes and Effects
While Human’s greatest achievements have brought progress in society, often these advanced
achievements have led to environmental deterioration and an imbalance in livability and
sustainability. Canada has to emphasize making decisions that will ensure a sustainable as well
as livable lifestyle for all. We have to tame our appetite and to think of livable as well as
sustainable living. This paper will be discussing the issue of sustainability in the current
generation. Sustainability crisis has developed as a result of rapid and enormous population
growth. An unsustainable population can lead to depletion of resources and atrocious quality of
life. Urbanization also is a determining factor in the cause of imbalance between livability and
sustainability. This essay will further explore the topic of environmental crisis and how they have
negatively impacted our ability to grow into an ideal country.
Overpopulation is associated with negative environmental and economic outcomes
ranging from the impacts of over-farming, excessive greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation,
and water pollution to eutrophication and global warming. Thus, decreasing livability standards
and sustainability. According to the documentary ‘Living in the cities’ we watched in class,
Dhaka, is one of the most densely populated cities with 2,639 people per square mile. With
about 400,000 new residents arriving each year from rural areas seeking a better life, Dhaka is
straining under the pressure of its rapidly swelling population. This mega city faces countless
problems, such as exponentially growing slums, poor quality housing, unreal traffic jams,
nagging electrical blackouts, stifling air pollution, poor governance, inadequate clean water
supply, and poor sanitation. Overpopulation can reduce livability standards. According to the
documentary ‘overpopulated’ overpopulation often leads in cultural shifts, away from families.
According to the cultural connection debate by Jennifer and Suveshna, as the human population
continues to explode, finite natural resources, such as fossil fuels, fresh water, arable land, coral
reefs and frontier forests, continue to plummet, which is placing competitive stress on the basic
life sustaining resources and leading to a diminished quality of life. It strains carrying capacity,
