Cultural Community Needs
1. Describe specific culture/ethnic population selected in detail.
Nationally, the Hispanic population is ranked as the second largest ethnic population
group in the United States. It is estimated that 19 percent or more than 60 million make
up the national population. From a cultural perspective, Hispanics are of Mexican culture
since they have a Mexican ancestry. In New York, the Hispanic population is estimated
to be 2.5 million or 29 percent of the City’s total population. The Hispanics population in
New York is comprised of six subgroups namely; the Puerto Ricans; the Dominicans; the
Mexicans; the Colombians; the Ecuadorians; and the Salvadoran. The Hispanic
population is considered to be younger unlike the rest of the American population; they
possess less economic wealth; and are less educated.
2. Describe rationale for selecting this population.
, The Hispanic population is young and increasing and plays a central role in the socio-
cultural, economics and political aspects of New York City. However, they face
insurmountable challenges such as access to affordable housing, low income and a high
uninsured rate. Even though Hispanics have high life expectancy rate compared to non-
Hispanic whites; their health status is largely determined by factors such as cultural or
language barriers; the lack of health insurance coverage as well as proper preventive care.
3. Describe a cultural/ethnic need within your area, clinical practice, or
community.
It is evident that the population of New York City has become significantly diverse over
the years. This means that there are differences when it comes to the level of education,
income, language as well as cultural and ethnic values. Therefore, there is a need to
ensure that the healthcare system from the policy levels takes into consideration the
diverse nature of the city; hence, ensuring that all ethnic populations are catered for. For
instance, Hispanic population view teaching and learning as process that ought to take
into consideration the Hispanic culture.
4. Describe the approved health issue from your chosen cultural population.
A risk factor found to be common among the Hispanic population is obesity. Overweight
and obesity can be referred to as the excessive as well as abnormal fat in one’s body;
thereby, increasing risk to other severe health conditions such as diabetes and
hypertension.
