Nursing and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) NAME Chamberlain College of Nursing NR 553: Global Health Policy DATE Investigate a non-governmental organization (NGO) involved in global health advocacy. Describe how nursing is or may become involved in advocacy for one global health issue or policy through this agency. Week 6: Nursing and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Arabi, Rafii, Cheraghi, and Ghiyasvandian, (2014), state the health systems are rapidly evolving and precipitating the need for the nursing profession to move along with these changes. Consequently, nurses need not only to be involved in the implementation of health policies but also take leading roles in influencing their formulation. According to Burke (2016), nurses have a responsibility of influencing the current and future healthcare delivery states and active participation in shaping policy is one of the vital ways through which nurses can promote healthcare. The Global Health Council (GHC) is one of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that is involved in global health advocacy. The organization was established in 1972 with the aim of promoting global health and wellbeing through facilitating informed investment and policies by supporting and connecting advocates, implementers and stakeholders around global health priorities. It also provides a vital forum for the global health stakeholders to engage and have a collaborative voice on crucial global health issues. GHC’s diverse members span over 150 countries and focus on all scopes of global health from research, delivery, and evaluation (Global Health Council, n.d). Nurses can help in addressing the global health issues through GHC by for one raising awareness the various problems in the health concern to the other stakeholders and therefore facilitating the advocacy on the issue. As nurses are the largest workforce in the healthcare sector and regularly interact with patients their families and other stakeholders regularly they are well placed to understand the latest development in the sector. Nurses can also provide evidence-based interventions in such areas as improving patient care, improving the health of populations as well are reducing costs in addressing the global health concerns. (2016). Influence through policy: Nurses have a unique role. Reflection on Nursing leadership. Retrieved from, Global Health Council. (n.d). About Us. Retrieved from, PROFESSOR RESPONSE TO POST: Nurses have a great role in promoting the mission of GHC. Please share your thoughts how we can get nurses' work recognized on the world stage. RESPONSE TO PROFESSOR: Dr. Fildes and classmates, Nurses can get their efforts working with global health issues recognized in the world stage through the development of sustainable academic structures that promote global health nursing, through research, policies, and effective partnerships. Nursing scientists contribute unique, frontline perspectives to produce innovative solutions to global health's most challenging problems (Gimbel, Kohler, Mitchell, & Emami, 2017). Nurse researchers must develop new models of quality care that are evidence-based, patient-centered, affordable, and accessible to diverse populations. Nurses should participate in collaborative research which can synergistically improve their efforts and results. Facilitating multidisciplinary research fosters collaborative research ventures and promotes effective dissemination of nurse-led global health research (Gimbel, Kohler, Mitchell, & Emami, 2017). When nurse researchers collaborate with other disciplines in healthcare, the integrated knowledge can help them achieve outstanding results and earn them recognition on the world stage. Nurses should submit their research to academic and scientific publications to serve as a source of knowledge and evidence for students, practitioners, and emerging researchers. Nursing scholars are interested in disseminating their work through publication to improve patient outcomes and enhance dissemination of findings to a wide audience, nationally and globally. Nurses must articulate what they want to happen in health care to make it more truly patient-centered and to improve quality, access, and value. Nursing professionals must engage in the policy-making process to ensure that the changes they believe in are realized. Nurses must become active leaders in the policy-making process globally and seek out new partners who share their goals. Political engagement is one avenue nurses can have an impact on health care globally. This will enable their efforts to be recognized more around the world. Finally, sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships are critical for nursing research and policy-making in the global health arena (Gimbel, Kohler, Mitchell, & Emami, 2017). Nurses must build new partnerships in areas ranging from government, businesses, state and national medical organizations, to consumer groups to deliver quality care that is accessible to diverse populations (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Nurses need to be represented on the boards of private nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, which do not provide health care services but have a large impact on health care decisions. References Gimbel, S., Kohler, P., Mitchell, P., & Emami, A. (2017). Creating academic structures to promote nursing's role in global health policy. International nursing review, 64 1, 117-125. Institute of Medicine (US). Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing. (2011). The future of nursing: Leading change, advancing health. Washington, DC: National Academies Press. RESPONSE TO PEER POST: Gomez and Ruger (2015) stated that although many governments would like to implement their own policies regarding health care for their people, international organizations have been able to influence these governments to enact change to better serve their people. Then, they incorporate these changes into their own domestic policies. Leslie, Faina, and classmates, The international community has begun to recognize that effective global action requires meaningful stakeholder involvement in international policymaking and implementation. Even when government support is genuine, lack of resources, opposition, agenda overload, and lack of expertise may result in governments failing to implement their commitments to public policy. In these situations, NGOs must switch from being lobbyists on policymaking to being observers. Here their political position is unquestionable because NGOs are simply asking governments to implement the policies that they have already officially endorsed. No single group, whether government, the private sector, or NGOs is equipped to address global healthcare issues on its own. Thus, economic, social, and environmental challenges the world is facing and has to resolve require growing multi-stakeholder participation and collaboration (Tortajada, 2016). NGOs have the expertise to pass on information about the situations that they encounter, can take action in the name of the populations that they serve, and can establish expertise in the field.
