The APUSH A+ & 5-Score Mastery Guide
A Hyper-Detailed Reasoning, Writing, and Content Guide for the AP U.S. History Exam
Part 1: The A+ & 5-Score Skill Mastery
This is the "how and why" of the exam. You get an A by knowing facts. You get a 5 by using
facts to build an argument.
DBQ Mastery: The 7-Point "No-Fail" Template
This is the 7-point, 25% of your grade, "make or break" essay.
1. The Complexity Thesis (1 Point)
* Weak Thesis (The 3): "The Gilded Age saw changes and continuities." (Worthless)
* Good Thesis (The 4): "From 1865-1900, industrialization caused massive economic growth
for corporations and new social problems for workers." (Okay, but basic)
* AMAZING THESIS (The 5): "Although [Counter-Argument], [Your Argument 1] and [Your
Argument 2] prove that [Your Main Claim]."
* Example (Gilded Age): "Although advocates for laissez-faire capitalism argued that
industrialization created new opportunities for social mobility, the reality for most working-class
, Americans was one of economic exploitation and political disenfranchisement, ultimately
leading to a fundamental challenge to America's democratic ideals by the turn of the century."
* Why it's a 5: It's complex, it shows nuance (the "Although" part), and it sets up a clear,
two-pronged argument (econ exploitation + political disenfranchisement) that you can prove
with the documents.
2. Contextualization (1 Point)
* The "How": Write 3-5 sentences that set the stage. It must be before the prompt's start date.
Think of it as the "Previously on..." at the start of a TV show.
* The "Why": It shows the examiner you understand the bigger picture and that this prompt
didn't happen in a vacuum.
* Example (Prompt on: 1844-1860 Causes of Civil War):
* AMAZING CONTEXT: "The period from 1844-1860 did not spontaneously erupt into
conflict, but it was rather built on a foundation of shaky compromises. The Missouri
Compromise of 1820 had drawn a line across the country, creating a temporary, fragile balance.
Furthermore, the debates of the Nullification Crisis in the 1830s established the radical idea of
'state' rights' as a political weapon. These unresolved tensions over slavery's expansion and the
nature of federal power led to the conflicts of the 1850s."
3. Evidence from the Docs (1-2 Points)
* Using 3 Docs (1 pt): You just have to mention 3 docs (easy)
* Using 6 Docs to Support Your Argument (1 pt): This is the real point. You CANNOT just
quote-dump or summarize.
* Argumentation Script:
* Weak: "Document 2 says..."
* AMAZING JUSTIFICATION: "The political cartoon in Document 2, which depicts...
vividly illustrates the argument that... This is significant because it shows..."
* AMAZING JUSTIFICATION: "The data in Document 5, showing a 300% increase in steel
production, directly supports the claim that... [state your claim]. However, this document fails to
