Production & Operation Management: UNIT 1- Introduction

This file focuses on the meaning, process, and management of production. Production Meaning: Defined as the process of transforming (converting) inputs (raw materials) into outputs (finished goods) to satisfy human wants. Ways of Transformation: Transformation can be achieved through Disintegration (one input to many outputs, e.g., steel to many products), Integration or Assembly (many inputs to one output, e.g., parts to a car), or Service (increasing value through after-sale support). Production Management: The function of effective planning and regulating the operations responsible for the actual conversion of materials into finished products. Its primary objectives are to achieve the Right Quality, Right Quantity, at the Right Time, and the Right Cost. Scope: Key areas of production management include Product Design and Development, Plant Location and Layout, Production Planning and Control, Materials Management, and Quality Control.
