UNIT-1
Tax, in general, is the imposition of financial charges
upon an individual or a company by the Government
of India or their respective state and talking about
income tax comes into picture when we talk about
direct tax as it is liability of the person who is
, earning that particular income. There are various
types of taxes that are there in our country so
shortly, certain are discussed below:
Types of taxes:
Direct and indirect taxation
Direct taxation - This is the taxation on income. This
covers taxes like income tax profits tax and wealth
taxes and these are the ones in which the liability to
pay falls on the one who is earning that particular
income.
Indirect taxation - This is taxation on expenditure.
This covers taxes like VAT, excise duties (tax on
cigarettes, alcohol etc.). These are the ones which
the liability is with someone else.
Progressive, Regressive and proportional taxes
Taxes differ according to their impact on different
income groups. Some taxes will be redistributed
from better-off or high income groups to less well-
off and low income groups and these are called
progressive taxes. However, others will have the
opposite effect and these are called regressive
taxes.
