This assignment is based primarily on the material presented in Module 2 (From single-celled to multicellular
organisms). You are asked to apply the knowledge learned from this module to answer an essay question. In
addition to accessing your understanding of Module 2, it will also begin to teach you how to write scientific
papers/reports by learning how to properly find source material and reference it in your assignment.

You must adhere to the following when preparing your essay.
1. Follow the submission instructions given above (including how to name the file that you submit into
the SafeAssign Dropbox).
2. The assignment must be typed in 12-point font and double-spaced.
3. Student name, student number, course number, assignment number, submission date plus word count
must be listed at the top of the first page.
4. The essay must have a title that relates to the content of your essay. Do not put this title on a separate
page.
5. Essay must be between 270 and 330 words. This word count may include in-text citations (e.g., Smith
et al 2019) but must exclude the reference list. There will be a 5% penalty for answers outside of these
limits.
6. Submissions should use essay style. This means that that the assignment must have a clear
introductory paragraph, one or more body paragraphs and a short conclusion.
7. Sources should be cited and references should use the format given in the section called “About
References” which is found on pages 4-6 of this document.
8. Sources should be scientific and scholarly (like textbooks and journals). Online journals may be used
but students should not include other websites as sources for this essay. Please read the document
“References and Sources in Biology” (available on Blackboard – under the heading “Assessments” >>
Assignments”) for additional information.
9. The essay requires at least two references, one of which may be the course textbook.
10. The rubric for this assignment is located at the end of this document on page 7.
