MSN Essential IX: Master’s-Level Nursing Practice
Recognizes that nursing practice, at the master’s level, is broadly defined as
any form of nursing intervention that influences healthcare outcomes for
individuals, populations, or systems. Master’s-level nursing graduates must
have an advanced level of understanding of nursing and relevant sciences as
well as the ability to integrate this knowledge into practice. Nursing practice
interventions include both direct and indirect care components.
Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies
#5 Technology and Information Literacy Competencies
1. Integrates appropriate technologies for knowledge management to
improve health care.
2. Translates technical and scientific health information appropriate for
various users’ needs.
2a). Assesses the patient’s and caregiver’s educational needs to provide
effective, personalized
health care.
2b). Coaches the patient and caregiver for positive behavioral change.
3. Demonstrates information literacy skills in complex decision making.
4. Contributes to the design of clinical information systems that promote

, The essentials of master’s education in nursing was released in 2011 and it
outlines what is expected of master’s prepared nurses. There are nine
essential outcomes an advanced practice nurse must demonstrate in order to
improve healthcare outcomes. The essentials set forth will help provide a
better understanding of nursing practice and leadership opportunities so that
continual learning can be promoted (AACN, 2011).

effectively in advanced nursing roles
Master’s prepared nurses are expected to provide patients with exceptional
care. As clinical nurse leaders, master’s prepared nurses recognize this to
include technology and health information. The integration of technology
into healthcare has improved communication in many ways and will
continue to do so as new advances present themselves. The electronic
medical record is one example of how healthcare professionals can
effectively communicate with one another and stay abreast of the patient’s
situation.

Nursing Practice
Nursing practice at this level includes direct and indirect patient care.
Master’s level nurses are expected to have advanced knowledge and
understanding of nursing and the sciences involved and must be able to
organize both into their practice (AACN, 2011). Advanced practice nurses
will be able to influence the outcomes of individual patients, systems, and
populations (AACN, 2011). Master’s prepared nurses have solid
backgrounds on to which they continue to learn and build. This course
allowed me to build upon my knowledge with the use of research and
interactive discussion posts.
