conditions. How can emerging technologies solve or at least ease these challenges?
Patients with chronic conditions often get frustrated with healthcare. Since their condition
is chronic they have to continually visit their healthcare provider, take medications,
undergo lab testing, and possibly other procedures. There is also a mental strain that is
put on patients with chronic conditions and can cause burnout. Telehealth is one newer
technology that can decrease the burden of chronic conditions because patients can do
follow up appointments from the comfort of their own home. EHRs that are linked to
patient portals are beneficial to patients because they can access their health information
anywhere and can begin to understand their condition and can even see improvements or
deficits. Healthcare social medias could be beneficial to patients and their health by
motivating patients and allowing them to connect with providers in a more relaxed
environment.
2. List some of the benefits of integrating a PHR with a health social network for patients
with chronic illness, their caregivers, and the organization.
Caregivers and the patients would have a more accessible line to the healthcare
organization. From my personal experience with patients who have a chronic illness they
have better outcomes when they have a caregiver or familial support that stays involved
in their healthcare. Involving them through this health social media network would
enable them to help patients understand medical information, be more active in patient
treatments, and motivate the patients through their treatments. The environment of a
health social network would also be beneficial to patients because it would be a more
relaxed environment than in a doctor’s office. Patient’s would be more relaxed and it
could help them discuss and understand their own conditions and treatments.
3. Name the specific effects that adopting e-health and social media applications will have
on the structure and strategies of a healthcare organization.
Adopting these platforms would increase the need for healthcare IT and HIPAA policies.
There would have to be several people in charge of monitoring these applications and
ensuring patient privacy. Providers or their organizations would also have to take the time
to educate patients on the e-health and social media applications. These applications
could also decrease unnecessary hospital and doctor’s office visits and allow physicians
more time to focus on patient’s that actually need them. E-health applications could also
reduce costs for both patients and physicians. Patients would save money from reduced
doctor visits and in most cases telehealth is cheaper than physically going to the doctors.
Healthcare organizations would benefit because indirect costs and burnout would be
reduced. In many cases of hospitalizations physicians get reimbursed by insurances
according to the perceived quality of care. This is becoming more prevalent, and long
hospital stays can sometimes cause hospitals to lose money. E-health applications can
improve health outcomes, improve patient compliance, and decrease rehospitalizations.
4. How might the adoption of an integrated PHR and health social network change the
