Introduction
● In India, minority refers to communities that are numerically smaller in the
population or have distinct cultural, religious, or linguistic identity.
● The Constitution provides special rights and safeguards to protect their identity,
culture, and interests.
● Minorities are mainly of two types:
1. Religious Minorities
2. Linguistic Minorities
RELIGIOUS MINORITIES IN INDIA
The Government of India (under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992)
recognizes the following as religious minorities:
1. Muslims
2. Christians
3. Sikhs
4. Buddhists
5. Jains
6. Zoroastrians (Parsis)
LINGUISTIC MINORITIES
● Groups whose mother tongue/language is spoken by fewer people in a particular
State.
● Example:
○ Tamil speakers in Karnataka
○ Telugu speakers in Maharashtra
○ Urdu speakers in Rajasthan
● Language minorities vary state-wise, not nationally.
