Introduction
The Lokpal and Lokayuktas are anti-corruption bodies created to investigate corruption
cases against public officials.
They were established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013.
● Lokpal → For the Central Government
● Lokayukta → For the State Governments
Background
● The demand for Lokpal started in the 1960s.
● Gained huge momentum during the Anna Hazare movement (2011).
● Government passed the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, to set up strong
anti-corruption institutions.
Structure of Lokpal
Lokpal consists of:
1. Chairperson
2. Up to 8 Members
○ At least 50% must be judicial members
○ At least 50% must be from SC, ST, OBC, minorities, or women
Appointment
Lokpal members are appointed by the President based on recommendations of a Selection
Committee:
● Prime Minister (Chairperson)
● Speaker of Lok Sabha
● Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha
● Chief Justice of India (or his nominee)
● One eminent jurist
