Question 1: liveability, life course and policy making
 Briefly define the concept of relative liveability and explain how it is linked to the life course
approach.
- The relative liveability of places depends on the environmental and social quality of a place
as perceived by residents, workers, customers and visitors to the area. People perceive
liveability differently because the needs and desires of someone over a certain place changes
over the life course, on top liveability differs over generations since there are generational
shifts in liveability preferences due to demographic changes. This results that people
perceive liveability differently and thus results in this relative liveability

 Take an objective or subjective approach to measure liveability and name 3 indicators of
liveability for the elderly, based on their preferences, needs, and perceptions of the built and
social environment.
o Objective approach to measure liveability for elderly: accessibility of and within the
neighbourhood  elderly friendly pedestrian, distance to nearest bus stop,
proximity of amenities/services
o Subjective approach to measure liveability for elderly: too what extend are elderly
satisfied about their neighbourhood: familiarity, involved/participate in NH activities,
 Explain if or to what extent the compact city is an appropriate and effective policy approach
to enhance liveability by stating 2 opportunities and limitations, respectively.

The compact city  2 opportunities:
- by boosting the city and boosting the cities economy, there was an intention for upgrading
the city. This led to improved housing and providing an attractive urban climate to be
economically competitive
- In this way, supporting the poor was done by supporting the urban economy since the
opportunities for work increased
- With the compact city, a mixed population was attracted by mitigative selective migration,
this creates diversity in the city.
The compact city  2 limitations:
- Within the compact city, the option for high density building and high density population is
opted which is often not perceived as liveable due to the related factors of it (noise, .. etc)
- Opting for a mixed housing policy in which different other classes migrate into a
neighbourhood does not always lead to higher liveability

Question 2: non-linear neighbourhood change through studentification: mechanisms and
consequences
 Describe how the process of studentification can enhance non-linear neighborhood change,
as described in the lecture on mechanisms of NB change.
 Provide arguments why and for whom this NB change is a positive or a negative change.
 Describe an intervention that can mitigate or stimulate this process.

Studentification: clustering and concentration of students in a neighbourhood which can result in
socio-cultural change and physical effects

Process of change non-linear:
- Collective socialization: the role that students exert on shaping each other’s behaviour,
attitude, values on what is appropriate in the neighbourhood
