(CVC)
Introduction
The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) is an independent, apex anti-corruption body
of the Government of India.
It was created to prevent corruption in central government offices, public sector banks,
and public sector undertakings.
It became a statutory body through the CVC Act, 2003.
Background
● Originally set up in 1964 by the Government of India based on the Santhanam
Committee recommendations.
● Later made a statutory body (legal authority) by the CVC Act, 2003.
Composition of CVC
The Commission consists of:
1. Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) – Head
2. Two Vigilance Commissioners
Appointment
● All members are appointed by the President of India.
● Appointment is based on recommendations of a committee consisting of:
○ Prime Minister (Chairperson)
○ Home Minister
○ Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha
