Introduction
● The Advocate General (AG) is the highest law officer of a State in India.
● He is the legal advisor to the State Government.
● The post is created under Article 165 of the Constitution.
Appointment
● Appointed by the Governor of the State.
● Must be a person qualified to be a Judge of a High Court.
○ i.e.:
■ Citizen of India
■ 10 years as an advocate in High Court or 10 years in judicial office.
Term of Office
● Constitution does not fix any specific term.
● Holds office during the pleasure of the Governor.
● Can resign by giving resignation to the Governor.
● Usually changes with the change of State Government.
Duties and Functions
1. Advises the State Government on legal matters.
2. Appears in High Court and Supreme Court on behalf of the State.
3. Performs legal tasks assigned by the Governor.
4. Defends the State in important cases.
5. Drafts and examines legal documents and bills of the State Government.
