Meaning
Fundamental Duties are the moral and civic obligations of every Indian citizen.
They guide citizens on how to behave responsibly towards the nation.
Background
● Added by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976.
● Based on the Constitution of USSR.
● Originally 10 duties → Later 11th Duty added in 2002 (86th Amendment).
List of Fundamental Duties (Article 51A)
1. To abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions.
2. To respect the National Flag and National Anthem.
3. To cherish and follow the noble ideals of the freedom struggle.
4. To protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.
5. To defend the country and render national service when required.
6. To promote harmony and brotherhood among all people.
7. To value and preserve the rich heritage of our culture.
8. To protect and improve the natural environment (forests, rivers, wildlife).
9. To develop scientific temper and humanism.
10.To safeguard public property and avoid violence.
11.To provide education to children (age 6–14 years). (Added in 2002)

● They are non-justiciable (cannot be taken to court).
