Strategies and communication techniques used with individuals different
needs to overcome different challenges:
Managing conflict:
Being able to manage conflict is essential when working in the health and social care as they
face a lot of conflict in their work environment from service users, to family reaching
disagreement over certain care plans or other factors.

Do: Don’t:
- Make sure that the issues are fully - Conduct your conversation in a
outlined public place
- Acknowledge emotions and - Leave the discussion open- instead
different styles create an action plan
- Have a comfortable environment - Finish peoples sentences or talk
for any meetings over them
- Set a time frame for the discussion - Use Jargon
- Establish good rapport - Constantly interrupt
- Use names and, if appropriate, - Do something else while trying to
titles, throughout listen
- Work to cool down the debate in a - Distort the truth
hot conflict - Use inappropriate humour
- Convince parties in a cool conflict
that something can be done

Strategies for overcoming challenges:
Educational information materials- educational informative materials inform people about
current thinking on how to live healthily and also give advice on how to overcome
challenges, such as giving up smoking, or how to apply for funding. Strategies could include:
leaflets, posters, games, slide presentations, wall displays, flyers or web based materials

Training courses- courses are available to help people with care and support needs to
overcome challenges

Opinion leaders- an opinion leader is a well-known individual or organization that has the
ability to influence public opinion. An opinion leader can be anyone who has an active voice
in a community, who speaks out and is often asked for advice.

Clinical audits- A clinical audit is a systematic review of care based on standards of best
practice and explicit criteria. Based on the results, changes are then implemented, wherever
necessary.

Computer aided advice systems- these are online decision support systems that supply
service providers with specific information when they need it. These systems provide
prompts designed to reflect best practice and remind service providers to tale or avoid a
certain action.

Patient-mediated strategies- patient-mediated strategies provide information via mass-
media campaigns to service users and the wider public about the latest evidence-based
practice. These strategies also educate and motivate service providers about changes in
practice.

Conflicts of interest:
When dealing with disagreements with a service user, there is often no right or wrong
answer so professionals have to look for an ethical solution by considering the following
questions. For example, considering any risks related to the decision and who would be
affected, considering the legal and professional responsibilities, considering the
organizations policies, and reviewing all the facts available on the case.

Balancing services and resources:
This is a major factor that causes conflict in the health and social care sector, this refers to
who should be treated first, how they should allocate resources, for example, whether they
should treat a patient who is young and has a long life ahead of them first or whether they
should treat an elderly person who has contributed well to the society first when there is a
shortage in services or resources. These decisions often lead to a board meeting where all
factors are considered and an ethical decision has to be made.
Confidentiality:
Confidentiality policies are put in place in the work environment in order to protect the
service user’s rights. This refers to not sharing a patients private information without their
consent or knowledge. A professional is required to avoid doing things such as: discussing a
patient with someone unless necessary inside and outside of the care setting, leave any
confidential forms around for others to find, or leave certain records unattended.

Confidential information should only be shared when an individual is at risk or harming
themselves or another individual. This would be the only exception to a professional
breeching confidentiality.

Legislation and guidance on conflicts of interest:
Organizations within the UK:
1. National Health Service
This organization within the UK provides free healthcare services for residents, and was
formed through the idea that health care should be available for everyone.
2. Department of Health
This is a department within the government that funds the free health care in England in
order to improve the publics quality of life.
3. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
This organization is independent from the government and its aims to improve the outcome
quality of those using public health services by providing National advice and guidance.
4. Health and Safety Executive
This organization reviews the regulations and policies that have been put in place to
produce research statistics in order to reduce injuries or death across the UK’s working
environment.
