1. Introduction
The Prime Minister (PM) is the real executive head of India.
While the President is the nominal head, the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers
exercise actual power.
This system is based on the parliamentary form of government.
2. Appointment of the Prime Minister
● The Prime Minister is appointed by the President of India.
● Usually, the leader of the majority party or majority coalition in Lok Sabha becomes
the PM.
● If no party has a clear majority, the President can appoint the leader most likely to
command majority support.
3. Qualifications
No specific qualifications are mentioned, but the PM must:
● Be a citizen of India
● Be a member of Parliament
○ If not an MP at the time of appointment, must get elected within 6 months
● Be at least 25 years old if from Lok Sabha
