Unit 5: Meeting individuals care and support needs
In this study, i will be discussing the needs of 2 separate
individuals who have been admitted to receiving care within their
local community hospital. The purpose of a community hospital is
to cater essential care towards those who require diagnostic
procedures, rehabilitation and end of life care, however
depending on the geographics of the community hospital, care
may be limited in particular locations.
Case study 1: Valerie B. Aged 24 years
Valerie B. was admitted to the community hospital, following
surgery for her appendix which burst before she could reach the
hospital. Valerie has mental health problems which began when
her parents died when she was six years old. Valerie's surgery
was complicated due to her being obese. She has low self-esteem
and cannot see why she needs to lose weight or change her
lifestyle. Valerie lives in a flat provided by a housing association,
but she has been bullied by local teenagers because of her
obesity. Valeries surgical wound is healing, but she does not want
to go home because she is afraid that the bullying will start again.
She is unemployed and receives Universal benefits. Valerie has a
hearing impairment but has never been assessed for any support
to improve her hearing. Valerie is vegetarian.
Case study 2: Aisha H. aged 82 years
Aisha M. was admitted to the community hospital, to recover from
a bout of pneumonia. Aisha has vascular dementia, which is
becoming more severe. Currently, Aisha lives alone, having been
single all her life. She has no family. Aisha is a practicing
Buddhist. The neighbor who visits Aisha, said that Aisha often
wanders around late at night in the garden, muttering to herself.
The neighbor doesn't think that Aisha is safe living at home, but

,has no one to look after her, as her siblings are now dead. The
neighbor also said that the flat was dirty, and that Aisha didn't
appear to have any food in the cupboards or fridge. Aisha has
developed incontinence since being admitted to the community
hospital and requires constant change. Her vascular dementia is
causing her to have delusions, where she appears to hear voices
and can be heard speaking to her former friends who she no
longer has contact with.
P1- explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for
individuals with different needs.
Equality: a situation where men and women, people of various
races and religions-etc. Are treated fairly and receive the same
opportunities.
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/equality
The equality, diversity and human rights teams apart from many
community hospitals are trained to provide an adequate amount
of care and support to all patients regardless of their
circumstances. For example, any patients who are bilingual will
require a translator, therefore the team must arrange for this to
be swiftly put into place. The equality, diversity and human rights
team encourage all patients to raise any issues or complaints
they have within the community hospital regarding feeling
neglected of their personal needs when receiving care, being
treated unfairly or experiencing discrimination-etc. Their main
duty is protecting their patients and ensure that any issues
brought up are unlikely to become a recurring issue and therefore
will assess and address certain situations and put stricture polices
and procedures into place.
To ensure that the nurses in the community hospital can provide
Valerie with the right level of equality throughout her own
experience there they must follow rules and regulations set out to
avoid any form of inequality. For example, Valerie suffers from a
burst appendix; she will require a healthy and balanced diet

,during her stay. Referring to the 2010 equality act all patients in
the community hospital have the right to be provided with a
meal(usually more than one option)This is beneficial for
individuals like Valerie because she is able to feel as though her
needs and rights have been met to a high standard and she is
being treated fair and justly like all other patients around her
regardless of her condition.

In regards to Aisha she suffers from a hearing impairment
therefore she is not able to pick up on some conversations due to
her lack of hearing. In order for her to be treated equally within
the community hospital environment need to treat her with a
level of patience and respect regarding her condition.Any form of
victimisation is not tolerated and a equal and tolerant
environment is encouraged. For instance, a physician may have to
go over Aisha's treatment plans and and sort of test results more
clearer and slowly to make sure that she understands all the
information provided to her clearly regardless of the state of her
hearing.

This will have a positive impact on Aisha's self esteem as she will
see that nurses as well as specifically the equality diversity and
human rights team understand that she may find some tasks like
her hearing difficult at times therefore she should be treated with
dignity and respect.

Diversity: a mixture of several races and religions that come
together and form a group/organisation.
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/diversity
All patients as well as the staff in the community hospital have the
right to be treated fairly in their work environment and a high level of
tolerance is expected regarding any aspect of their personal and
diverse identity. For example the NHS Workforce Race Equality
Standard is put into place in order to prevent any intolerance to ethnic
minority staff and patients on the basis of their
diversity.https://www.england.nhs.uk/about/equality/equality-hub/work
force-equality-data-standards/equality-standard/

, As valerie struggles with her mental health at times it is important
for the mental health hospital director to encourage the rest of
the staff, patients and the local community to spread more
awareness about mental health struggles and hopefully become
more accepting of those who struggle to cope with their mental
health conditions. For instance the hospital can coordinate specific
awareness days dedicated to mental health awareness.
https://campaignresources.dhsc.gov.uk/campaigns/better-health-
every-mind-matters/
This will positively benefit individuals such as Valerie who struggle
greatly at times with their mental health and would appreciate it
if those around could be tolerant and inclusive of her especially
once acquiring extra information through the various campaigns
to spread awareness.

In regards to Aisha she suffers from dementia due to her old
age.Diversity can be closely linked to spreading awareness about
her diversity and how individuals such as her healthcare support
team and friends who visit can assist Aisha in her stay at the
community hospital. For example having a day dedicated to
learning how to interact respectfully with those with dementia.
https://www.healthcheck.nhs.uk/commissioners-and-providers/
training/dementia-training/

Having training specifically for nurses on how to tackle difficult
situations regarding dementia can help ease the outbursts
patients like Aisha experience as they would feel as though they
are in a safe environment well looked after by trained
professionals. This will have a positive impact on Aisha's self
concept as she will not be ashamed other condition as those
around her will be highly educated on the topic .
