Design and Aesthetics
• Design: The way in which something is planned, made, or arranged.
• Aesthetics: The philosophical study of beauty and taste.
• Art and Aesthetics: Art refers to creative work; aesthetics is the study of beauty and
perception.
Art includes painting, dance, music, singing, writing, and all creative hobbies or skills.
Concept of Design:
• Idea
• Vision
• Strategy that guides the creation of a product.
* Design concept is the thought or rational behind design decisions.
Basic Elements of Design:
• Point • Line • Shape • Form • Texture • Light • Space • Colour
Types of Lines:
• Horizontal • Vertical • Diagonal • Zigzag • Dash line • Thin line • Thick line • Curved line •
Dotted line
Meanings of Lines:
• Horizontal: Width, calmness, relaxation
• Vertical: Height, stability
• Diagonal: Movement, direction, tension
• Zigzag: Energy, excitement, chaos
• Dash: Separation, impermanence
• Thin: Subtlety, delicacy, elegance
• Thick: Boldness, strength, stability
• Curved: Gracefulness, fluidity, femininity
• Dotted: Implied presence, softness
Shape Types:
• Geometric • Organic • Abstract
Geometric Shapes: Square, rectangle, triangle, circle, polygons.
Organic Shapes: Irregular, flowing natural shapes (leaf, wave, pebble).
Abstract Shapes: Stylized or symbolic forms, icons, modern artistic patterns.
