Functions of a port
• Traditional functions: A link in the total transport chain.
• Transit functions :The opportunity for the storage and transshipment of goods.
• Industrial functions: The logical outcome of its two other functions. Transshipment involves
costs, so sometimes it is cheaper or easier to process (raw) materials in the seaport.
• Network functions: Hub-and-spoke ports.
