O Level European History Q&A

*Main Causes of World War I (Summary - M.A.I.N):*

1. *Militarism* – European nations built up large armies and navies, creating
tension and competition. Countries believed that military power was the best
way to protect their interests.

2. *Alliances* – Two main alliances formed:

- *Triple Alliance*: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy

- *Triple Entente*: Britain, France, Russia

These alliances meant that if one country was attacked, others were pulled
into war.

3. *Imperialism* – European powers competed for colonies, especially in
Africa and Asia, leading to clashes and mistrust.

4. *Nationalism* – Pride in one’s country or ethnic group led to demands for
independence and hatred between nations (e.g. Slavic nationalism in the
Balkans).

*Trigger:* The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo (June
28, 1914) by a Serbian nationalist sparked the war.

*How Alliances Contributed to the First World War:*

Alliances played a major role in turning a local conflict into a global war.
Here's how:

1. *Division into Two Rival Blocs*:

, - *Triple Alliance*: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy

- *Triple Entente*: Britain, France, Russia

These alliances created two powerful and opposing sides in Europe,
increasing suspicion and fear.

2. *Chain Reaction After Assassination*:

- After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary
declared war on Serbia.

- *Russia*, an ally of Serbia, mobilized to defend it.

- *Germany*, allied to Austria-Hungary, declared war on Russia.

- *France*, allied to Russia, joined in.

- When Germany invaded Belgium to attack France, *Britain* entered the
war to defend Belgium.

3. *Encouraged Aggression*:

- Countries felt confident because they believed their allies would support
them if war broke out.

- This made nations more willing to go to war instead of solving issues
peacefully.

4. *Global Involvement*:

- Because of these alliances, countries that were not directly involved in
the conflict were pulled into the war.

*How Nationalism Created Tension in Europe Before World War I:*

1. *Pride and Rivalry Between Nations*:

- Countries like *Germany*, *France*, and *Britain* were extremely proud
of their power, military, and empires.
