1. Integers (Basic Rules)
Adding Integers:
Same signs → add, keep the sign.
Different signs → subtract, use sign of the bigger number.
Subtracting Integers:
Change the sign of the second number, then follow addition rules.
Example: 8 − (−3) = 8 + 3 = **11**
Multiplying & Dividing:
Same signs → positive
Different signs → negative
2. Fractions
Adding/Subtracting
1. Make denominators the same.
2. Add/subtract numerators.
3. Simplify.
Example: 3/4 + 1/8 = 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8
Multiplying
Multiply numerator × numerator and denominator × denominator
Example: 2/3 × 4/5 = 8/15
Dividing
Multiply by the reciprocal.
Example: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8
3. PEMDAS (Order of Operations)
P – Parentheses
E – Exponents
MD – Multiplication/Division (left → right)
AS – Addition/Subtraction (left → right)
Example:
7² + 5²
= 49 + 25
= 74
4. Algebra Basics
Solving for x
Move everything away from x using opposite operations.
Example:
2x + 4 = 12
2x = 8
x=4
