, Module 1 – Summary
Microprocessor: A programmable device that fetches, decodes, and executes instructions.
CPU Components:
• ALU – arithmetic/logic operations
• Registers – temporary storage
• Control Unit – sequencing and timing
• Program Counter – next instruction address
• Instruction Decoder – interprets opcodes
Instruction Cycle: Fetch → Decode → Execute → Store
Clock Speed: Number of operations per second.
Word Length: Bits processed at a time (4/8/16/32-bit).
Applications: Automation, military, gaming, embedded systems.
Evolution:
• 1st Gen – 4-bit (Intel 4004)
• 2nd Gen – 8-bit (8008/8080)
• 3rd Gen – 16-bit (8086/80286)
• 4th Gen – 32-bit (80386)
• 5th Gen – 64-bit (Pentium)
