EXAM- WALDEN
ABC-X model - ANSWERS-This model gets its name from four
interrelated factors that are theorized to describe the experience of
family stress
A factor represents the event or situation that the family encounters,
this interacts with the B factor the family's resources, the event or
situation also interacts with the C factor, the family's perception of
the event, and collectively the A, B, and C factors produce the stress
or crisis reaction which is the X factor
Stressful Events or Situations (A in ABCX model) - ANSWERS-An
occurrence that provokes a variable amount of change in the family
system
Family Resources (B in ABCX model) - ANSWERS-Traits, abilities, and
qualities of individual family members, the family system, and the
greater community in which the family is embedded that can be used
to address the demands imposed by the event or situation; may act
as a buffer against the potentially negative consequences of stressful
events
Family Perception (C in ABCX model) - ANSWERS-The family's
appraisal, assessment, or definition of the event or situation; there
are many different ways of looking at the same event
,Stress and Crisis (X in ABCX model) - ANSWERS-A product of the
event, the family's resources, and the family's perception of the
event
Stress- family's reaction or response to the event or situation (filtered
through their resources and perceptions)- a change in the family's
steady state; represented a change or disturbance in the family's
normal state and routines
Crisis- an overwhelming disturbance in the family's equilibrium that
involves sever pressure on and incapacitation of the family system;
genuine disorder and are unable to function normally or effectively
The Double ABC-X Model - ANSWERS-Created because family stress
unfolds over time, and families develop new perceptions and new
resources after they initially experience the even or situation; Divided
into precrisis and post crisis stages; variables in precrisis: stressor,
resources, perception, and crisis; post crisis factors: stressor pileup
(aA), existing and new resources (bB), perception (cC), and family
crisis and adaptation (xX)
Stressor Pileup (aA in double ABCX model post crisis) - ANSWERS-
Stressors rarely occur in isolation from other problems and are often
associated with other issues, events, and situations that are also
stressful to the family; initial stressor, family life changes, and
consequences of family coping bring on additional stressors
, Existing and New Resources (bB in double ABCX model post crisis) -
ANSWERS-Two types of family resources: the family's existing
resources at the time of the initial stressor and coping resources
(personal, family, or social resources that are developed or
strengthened in response to the initial stressor
Perception (cC in double ABCX model post crisis) - ANSWERS-Family's
perception of the initial stressor event and the stress/crisis produced
by that event as well as any stress pileup that followed
Family Crisis Adaptation (xX in double ABCX model post crisis) -
ANSWERS-Family's ultimate adaptation to the crisis; adaptation as
the process of stimulus regulation, environmental control, and
balancing to achieve a level of functioning, which preserves family
unity and enhances the family system and member growth
development
Vulnerability (double ABCX model) - ANSWERS-The family's ability to
prevent stressors from creating a crisis situation
Regenerative power (double ABCX model) - ANSWERS-The family's
ability to bounce back and recover from a crisis
Boundary ambiguity (double ABCX model) - ANSWERS-Occurs when
family members are unsure about who is in or out of the system and
who occupies what roles
