What does a leader want from a follower and how does that relate to a situation you have found yourself in? - Leader is someone who has the ability to influence, motivate and lead a group of people toward achieving a common goal. Every leader has own approach and way of leading. So a leader expectation may vary depending upon the type of leadership. In general, a leader would expect their followers to listen to them. It includes care and attention to what leader is saying. It helps to maximize the clarity of understanding. A leader would want follower to be communicative and participative. There has to be two ways communication between leader and follower in order increase productivity and avoid misunderstanding. Follower should be committed and persistence. Honesty, loyalty, effectiveness and efficiency will always please any leader. I was leading a group while working for a social organization in Nepal. We had various event organized every week. All the members would do as they were told but there was no feedback, suggestion or new ideas. It was like I was leading a bunch of robots. I had only 15 members in my group so, I decided to have a word with each individual and communicated with them to bring more ideas and make them participate in the decision making indirectly. 2. Similarly, there are various types of followers as well. There are two dimensions of followers: 1) Active and Passive 2) Dependent and Independent. According to Robert E. Kelley there are 5 types of followers. They are: a) Alienated followers: Alienated followers are independent and have the ability to think critically but they are passive. They are not a team player. They put their personal needs before the team’s need. They usually prefer to criticize and chose to resist when they don’t agree with a decision. They have the ability to contribute to the team but often they will not provide their input. According to Kelly Alienated followers represent between 15 to 25 % of followers in any organization. b) Conformist followers: They are the followers who avoid conflict by carrying out leader’s direction without any question. They are ready to sacrifice their own needs, ethics and moral. They are active and are dependent. They don’t have the ability to think critically. One of the drawbacks of these type of followers is that they hesitate to put forward their viewpoints and ideas which could get better result. They represent around twenty and thirty percent of followers in an organization. c) Pragmatist followers: They are the survivors. They prefer to play to safe rather than take a risk. They look for their personal benefits before committing any action. They don’t care about the organization growth rather are concentrated with their survival within the organization. They cover between twenty-five and thirty-five percent of average organization followers. d) Passive followers: They are dependent and comprise the least percent in any organization. They lack sense of responsibility and initiation. They need constant supervision. They require a strong incentive to be responsible and do their job. e) Exemplary followers: They are proactive, independent, able to think critically and effective. They have high priority for a leader-follower relationship. They are responsible and accountable. They are willing to learn and grow and also practice self-leadership. They carry on good performance and maintain high level of job satisfaction. 3. What does the concept of “manage up” refer to and how does that apply to the follower? - In simple terms manage up means to create and maintain a good and successful relationship with the superior, employer or manager. Follower can manage up by doing their job effectively and efficiently. They can work on building good communication with their manager or leader. Innovative and thinking outside the box will always please a leader. It is important to get to know your leader. It can be done by finding the answer to what goals they are looking to accomplish, what is their expectation from you, what kind of leadership approach they are following, what they value the most and so on. As a follower, they should know the concept of manage up and how to apply that in real scenario. It is not only the responsibility of leader to maintain harmony within the organization. Followers also play the equal role in it. They should always be ready to provide the helping hand to the leader. Focusing on the normal work and trying to figure out where one can be more effective will always help. However, a follower should not be a “yes man” in the meeting. They should be supportive, friendly and positive. Learning to accept the mistakes may get your boss lose their temper for a while but will help in the long run. They should also avoid favoritism. How is a leader a communication champion? - For a leader it is really important to have a good communication skill followed by people’s skill. He should be a master of words. A simple choice of word can make the difference between someone accepting or denying your message. There will be the times when followers will run out of motivation, will and interest to work. Leader fills them with energy and power by communicating with them. Leader is always ready to provide help even for the minor problems. Leader will always make everyone believe that every problem has solution and they have the ability to solve them. Followers don’t always need rewards to get motivated. A small compliment such as well done, good job will boost them. A good leader supports two way communications. They call for a meeting and push their followers to bring new ideas through group discussion and brainstorming. Communication can also be through visual effects. People tend to capture more what they see rather than what they hear. Communication should not always be about the work. A good leader shows interest in their followers by asking open-ended questions about the other person’s unique experiences. Leader as a communication champion will enhance the follower’s communication skills as well by providing different communication tools and strategies. Effective communication is so important for organizational success that not only managers, but also their employees must be effective communicators. One role of a manager is to help employees improve their communication skills. A communication will create a lasting positive impression. Every successful leader has always promoted good communication. A positive attitude has always helped them. 5. How does the leader create strategic conversations that include listening, openness, asking questions and other components of that concept?Latest tested exam 2020/2021LEADERSHIP EXERCISE THREE.docx - Strategic conversation refers to people talking across boundaries and hierarchical levels about the group or organizations vision critical strategic themes, and the values that can help to achieve desire outcomes. Leasers facilitate strategic conversations by I) asking questions and actively listening to others to understand their attitude and values, needs, personal goals, and desires. II) setting the agenda for conversation by underscoring the key strategic themes that are linked to organizational success, and III) selecting the right communication channels and facilitating dialogue. There are six key components for facilitating strategic conversations, an open communication climate, asking question, active listening, dialogue, and using stories for communication. • Open communication- Open communication means leaders sharing all types of information throughout the company across functional and hierarchical boundaries. Open communication runs counter to the traditional flow of selective information downward from supervisors to subordinates. Good leaders want communication to flow in all directions. To build an open communication climate, leaders break down conventional hierarchical boundaries that may be barriers to communication, enabling them to convey a stronger awareness of and commitment to organizational vision, goals, and values. • Listening: It is an important as asking question is listening to the responses.
