Part I. The following new concepts, theorems, methods, examples and symbols/notations we
studied in class (available on MyLS, in the folder “posted after each class”), which were not seen
in the midterm tests, may appear on the final paper.
1. Lectures 8-1 and 8-2
Definitions and examples of minimal, maximal, first and last elements of a partially ordered set, upper
and lower bounds, supremum and infimum of subsets in a partially ordered set, order completeness of a
partially ordered set, order-preserving function and order-isomorphism, similar ordered sets, order
types of linearly ordered sets.
Theorems and the methods used in the proofs: the completeness of the power set P(A), especially the
construction of the least upper bound of a collection of subsets of A; order properties are preserved by
order-isomorphisms; similarity defining an equivalence relation on a collection of partially ordered sets.
2. Lectures 9-1, 9-2 and 10-1
Definitions and examples of the equivalence relation (a,b) ~ (c,d) if ad = bc on the set Z × (Z – {0}), the
