IMMUNOPROPHYLAXIS
VACCINES IN CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES
MODES OF IMMUNITY
DISCOVERY OF VACCINES
Sir Edward Jenner, discovered the small pox vaccine.
He used a cowpox vaccine to vaccine humans against small pox.
VACCINATION
119
, What is a vaccine?
Harmless agents perceived as enemies.
Molecules usually proteins that elicit an immune response thereby
providing protective immunity against a potential pathogen.
PRINCIPLES OF VACCINATION
Vaccine must elicit active immunity to subsequent infections with
the same pathogen.
The vaccine achieves this by activating immunologic memory
similar to natural infection without risk of disease.
The immunologic memory enables the vaccine to provide long-
term protection after its administration.
The more similar a vaccine is to the natural disease, the
better the immune response to the vaccine.
