Introduction
Tourism serves as a vital aspect of many nations' economies, which is regarded as a
source of foreign exchange. Some countries rely solely on tourism to generate revenue that has
led to constructive development and growth (Amerta et al, 2018). Perhaps, this global industry
largely depends on the environment and nature as the key drivers of furnishing and painting the
various tourist destinations. Therefore, sustainable tourism is an important aspect that ensures
that as much as the tourism business goes on, the environment and other ecotourism are
incredibly protected (Hall, 2019). Sustainability in tourism is realized through responsible
accreditation, certification, and recognition by the official standardizing bodies such as the
Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), and the
International Organizational Standardization (ISO). This essay will define the differences
between accreditation, certification, and recognition in sustainable tourism benchmarks as far as
the legal certification bodies are concerned.
Accreditation is the quality assurance criteria that tourism centers or tourist destinations
undergo to confirm that they meet the minimum standards set forth by the regulating bodies
through a strict and recognized set of procedures upon them. Accreditation comes after
certification and recognition have been done (Mzembe et al, 2020). It aims to enhance quality in
the tourism business and tremendously improve standards. It has gone on records that some
tourist destinations lack consistency from one program to the other. In the end, they become
irrelevant and have wasted a government's input in terms of development and sustainability.
Accreditation gives consumers and other interested parties confidence concerning the legitimacy
and quality of the tourism product (Mzembe et al, 2020). Moreover, it improves control over
