MARKET RESEARCH
IN BUSINESS
,P1, P2, & M1
In this unit I will be discussing about the types of market research that is
used in most organizations. For the merit criteria, the company of my
choice is Home Centre. A company in the home retail-based industry.
Market research:
Market research is the collection of information that is taken record of by
a particular organization. Market research includes the data that is mainly
first handed or could be collected through a survey. This data is collected
by the organizations assigned employees in order to maintain or increase
the sales of the company by researching the target audience of the
company.
At Home Centre, having done good market research also ensures that
your company won’t go out of business. One of the main benefits of
market research includes the growth of the business in an abundant way.
This ensures immense growth and rise in profit of the company as it
keeps you prepared with a good research analysis beforehand for
whatever situation that may occur.
Types of Market research in a company:
1. Primary
2. Secondary
3. Qualitative
4. Quantitative
Primary Research:
This type of research is the research that is used on a first-hand
information basis. First-hand information includes; surveys, direct
feedback, reviews etc. An organization could conduct their own research
by their employees or, if
desired they can hire an
individual in order to conduct
this research. Primary
research responds to
researchers' specific needs.
One of the advantages pf this
research is that, it is also up
to date and includes all
details. Another advantage of
this type of research is that
the researched information is
being collected on a personal
level, thus leading the
information gathered to be
more relatable to the
researchers needs.
,An example of this type of research is provided. [KFC Survey]
KFC has provided a link on their website in order to receive feedback. The
link required a store number, date, time and order number. This is to
know a little brief view of the customer. This way they can work on their
service and ensure that their service and product is better as compared to
their competitors.
At home centre, when a research is being conducted, the primary type of
research could be used to collect information or gather data about a
particular product or service. This primary research can be beneficial to
the company in many
ways. The purpose of
this method of
analysis is simple and
it can be costly to
collect data from
such techniques.
Businesses and
organizations such as
home centre, prepare
multiple approaches
for the gathering of
such data, some of
which are, interviews,
polls or focus groups
with future or current
customers. Primary
research is an outstanding learning ability that can be helpful to Home
Centre in a number of environments, including business, personal and
academic. Home centre prepares multiple approaches for the gathering of
such data, some of which are, interviews, polls or focus groups with
future or current customers. Conducting primary research is a valuable
and beneficial ability that will significantly compliment your work in
secondary outlets, such as papers, newspapers, or books. Since home
centre as the main operating organization, they can have over all control
over the company’ research. This includes, the deciding of how many
responses should or can be collected, as primary research aims to
concentrate on knowledge that is required only, it can increase the
likelihood of research money being used effectively. Furthermore, the
knowledge obtained from primary research will be the personal data
gathered by Home Centres and will not be exchanged with any other
organization. That way, the data obtained will be kept secret from rivals,
and can often be seen as a strategic advantage against opponents.
, Secondary Research:
Secondary research provides information on competitors with whom the
business competes. The market share and the performance are included.
The organization performs polls to monitor and archive the opinions of the
public while conducting research on secondary studies. One advantage of
secondary type of research is that, the information is available online
thanks to the advancement of technology. Work can, therefore, be carried
out promptly.
An example of this type of research is provided. [Splash
Flyer]. Splash has published hardcopy posters on
newspapers and magazines. In addition to this, Splash
has also published occasional flyers with regard to
seasons and climate changes. This is done to spread out
details about the offers/ sales that are taking place. This
way they can spread information about their offers and
ensure that their service and product is better as
compared to their competitors. Provided in the side, is a
publication of a Splash ad on the magazine.
At home centre, when a
research is being conducted, the secondary
type of research could be used to collect
information or gather data about a
particular product or service that the
company is providing The purpose of this
method of analysis involves the usage of
data previously obtained from certain
business or organizations such as Home
Centre. Secondary research is available
from other sources that has already been
gathered this information is relevant to the
problem at hand. Either internal or
external to an organization. Since home
centre as the main operating organization,
they can have over all control over the
company’ research. This includes, although
the data is already accessible, this type of
study is cheaper than primary research. Businesses that use interviews,
magazines, books or articles already published to obtain evidence, but the
nature of data gathered may also rely on the type of product or service
that the organization needs to study. Furthermore, the knowledge
obtained from secondary research will be the personal data gathered by
Home Centres and will not be exchanged with any other organization.
This way, the data obtained will be kept protected from competitors.
