S5 IB Chemistry

, AIM

To determine the relative molecular mass of Butane (C4H10) by using a water
displacement technique and to compare it to the theoretically calculated RMM.

MATERIALS

1. Termometer
2. 100 ml measuring cylinder
3. Tray
4. Water
5. Measuring scale
6. Paper
7. Lighter

PROCEDURE

1. Weight the lighter.
2. Fill the tray with water.
3. Measure the temperature of the water with the termometer.
4. Sink the measuring cylinder in the tray full of water and then invert it.
5. Bubble gas into the cylinder.
6. Dry the lighter with paper.
7. Weight the lighter.
8. Find the air pressure in the room.
9. Calculate the molar mass of the gas.

RESULTS

RAW DATA:

Mass of lighter at the start: 19,9g +/- 0,1

Mass of lighter at the end: 19,7g +/- 0,1

Air pressure in room: 102,6kPa +/- unknown
