1- What did Mr. Chips do after the last bell of Brookfield?
He used to wind up the clock, put the wire guard in front of the fire, turned out the gas and carried a
detective novel to bed after the last bell of Brookfield.
2- Who was the doctor of Chips? What did he say about Chips’ health?
Merivale was Chips’ doctor. He believed that Mr. Chips was fitter than he and that he was suffering
from only anno domini (old age).
3- Where did Mr. Chips teach before joining Brookfield? Why was he not successful there?
Mr. Chips taught in Melbury School before joining Brookfield. He had been ragged a great deal there
because discipline was not his strong point there.
4- Who was Mr. Wetherby? OR What do you know about Mr. Wetherby? (Board 2010)
Mr. Wetherby was very fatherly and kind. He was the Headmaster of Brookfield when Mr. Chips joined
in 1870. He advised Mr. Chips on different matters. He said, “You are a young man, Mr. Chipping and
Brookfield is an old foundation. Youth and age often combine well. Give your enthusiasm to Brookfield
and Brookfield will give you something in return. And don’t let anyone play tricks with you. I gather
discipline was not always your strong point at Melbury”.
5- What advice did Mr. Wetherby give to Mr. Chips?
He advised Mr. Chips to take up firm attitude towards discipline. He further advised him not to allow
anybody to play tricks.

Colley was the first boy punished by Mr. Chips at Brookfield. He punished him by giving him hundred
lines to write to ensure discipline in the class. Later Colley rose to prominence in life and became a
baronet and alderman of the city of London. His son and grandson also came to Brookfield.

The big hall was full of five hundred ruffians ready to attack him. There was pin drop silence when a
student dropped the desk lid. Mr. Chips punished him to write hundred lines.

Merivale remarked on Mr. Chips ‘health, “You‘re past the age when people get these horrible diseases.
You’re one of the few lucky ones who are going to die a really natural death. That is, of course, if you
die at all. You’re such a remarkable old boy that one never knows.”

Mr. Chips served at Melbury for one year. He had been ragged there a good deal. He left Melbury
school as he had not liked it.

It was easy to remember the year of 1870 because of the Franco- Prussian War. Mr. Chips also joined
Brookfield in 1870. Moreover, Wetherby breathed his last in 1870.

Brookfield was situated behind a rampart of ancient elm trees. It was a group of eighteenth century
buildings centered upon a quadrangle. There were also acres of playing fields beyond it.
12- What kind of school was Brookfield Public School?
Brookfield Public School was an old grammar school established in 16th century during the reign of
Elizabeth. It was a good school, but of second rank.
13- When was Mr. Chips retired? What was presented to him at the time of retirement? (Board 2008)
Mr. Chips retired at the age of sixty-five in 1913. He was presented with a cheque, a clock and a writing
desk
14- When was Brookfield Public School founded? Why could it not become as famous as Harrow?
Brookfield Public School was founded in the reign of Elizabeth. There had been rise and fall in its luck;
therefore, it could not become as famous as Harrow.
15- What kind of men did Brookfield produce? OR What contribution did Brookfield make to

Brookfield Public School produced history-making men of the like judges, members of Parliament,
colonial administrators a few peers and bishops. However, it mostly turned out merchants,
manufacturers, professional men, squires and parsons.

Mr. Chips lived at Mrs. Wicket’s house. It was ugly and pretentious but that did not matter. It was
convenient for Mr. Chips.

He used to serve the boys with walnut-cake with pink icing from Reddaway’s. In the winter season, he
served them crumpets too. He offered tea to his guests too.
18- Who was Mrs. Wickett and what did she do for Mr. Chips? What was Mrs. Wickett’s duty at

Mrs. Wickett was the land lady of Mr. Chips. She had worked as the in-charge of the linen room at
Brookfield before she left the job. She let a room to Chips after his retirement and served him till his
death.

His small room was simply furnished. There were a few bookshelves, sporting trophies, Turkey carpet,
big easy chairs and the pictures of the Acropolis and the Forum.

He enjoyed reading, talking, remembering, drinking tea, receiving visitors, correcting the next edition of
the Brookfield directory, and writing his occasional letters were the quite enjoyment of Mr. Chips after
