Reason for consultation:
Post-diagnostic counseling of Mrs. Seedat’s for the diagnosis of her Parkinson’s disease as
referred to me by the neurologist.
Purpose of consultation:
The purpose of the consultation is to serve as the initial input towards the development of a
treatment and possible rehabilitation management plan for Mrs. Seedat.
Consultation format:
The consultation entailed a 90-minute interview at my counseling office at the Neuro-
assessment and rehabilitation Unit at the local University Hospital.
1. Description of the client
Mrs Seedat is a 68-year old female patient with Parkinson’s disease at the Neuro-assessment
and rehabilitation unit at the local University hospital. Mrs. Seedat behavior indicates that she
does not understand what her diagnosis entails, what implications it held for her overall
functioning, what she could expect regarding the disease progression as well as the long-term
consequences and prognosis of her condition. The discussion with her son regarding the
disease only confused her more and she was extremely concerned regarding the symptoms of
her condition. These concerns seemed to result from a confusion and inability to differentiate
between neurological conditions. (Tutorial letter PYC4813/102, 2020).
