Principles of Management – Short Notes
(2025 Edition)

1. Introduction to Management:
Management is the process of achieving organizational goals
efficiently and effectively through planning, organizing,
leading, and controlling resources such as people, money, and
materials.

It is both a science (based on systematic knowledge and
principles) and an art (requiring skill, creativity, and personal
judgment).

Management plays a vital role in business, education,
government, and non-profit sectors. Effective managers
balance people’s needs with organizational objectives.

2. Nature & Characteristics of Management:
1. Goal-Oriented: Every activity in management aims to
achieve organizational objectives.
2. Continuous Process: It is ongoing — planning,
implementing, and revising never stop.
3. Multi-Disciplinary: Combines elements from
economics, psychology, sociology, and statistics.

, 4. Dynamic: Adapts to changing market and
environmental conditions.
5. Universal: Applicable to all organizations — business,
government, or social.
6. Integrative Force: Brings together people, processes,
and resources.
7. Intangible: Cannot be seen directly, but its results
(like efficiency and growth) are visible.

3. Functions of Management
The management process is often described in four major
functions (Fayol’s framework):

A. Planning

Setting goals and deciding how to achieve them.
Involves forecasting, goal setting, strategy formulation, and
developing action plans.
Example: A retail company forecasting seasonal sales to
plan inventory levels.

B. Organizing
Arranging resources and activities to carry out the plans.
Includes creating organizational structure, defining roles,
and delegating authority.
Example: Assigning marketing, sales, and finance teams
with specific responsibilities.

C. Leading (Directing)
Guiding, motivating, and supervising employees to work
effectively.
