Intro video
 Frantz Fanon, born in 1935 in Martinique, a place where they saw themselves
as part of French empire, he cut span which connected them to French
-> He dealt with how whiteness is constructed compared to blackness
 Fanon first one to look into inequality of colonized areas and was part of nlf as
part of Algerian revolution, was expelled and practiced psychiatry in Tunesia,
wrote two books; black skin white masks, ratchet of earth; in this books he
explored nature of colonialism and racism
 After his death after the 60s, he was seen as a revolutionary writer, served
inspiration for many movements
 Opposed white european colonialism, but married white woman, first fought
with French but later again them, considered all colonialized people as his
brothers
 Black skin white masks, he was young when written, unique style in writing,
very discontinuous, not afraid to use all tools and methods possible to make
his point. Not classic scholarly text, very subjective out of pain/rage taking big
risk. Circumstances were difficult during revolution of liberation, struggle of
survival of body and mind.
 Psychology of colonialism, how it is internalized of colonized and how inferior
they feel. Psychological effects of racism, colonies have lust cultural identity
and adapted to colony. People of color were perceived as bad which leads
their acceptance to black self-hatred among people of color. They start to
develop a schizophrenic personality in which they also hate themselves cause
they are only surrounded by hate but don’t actually hate themselves.
 Black soul is a construct made by Europeans, just a fantasy
 Essence of blackness is fabrication of white, and every individual should only
be responsible for own definition
 Racism is ascribed in language, linguistics pre determine meaning black and
white
 Psychological problem of colonialism are still present even though we live in
postcolonial era, as seen as current movements

Seminar
Creation of blackness
 tried to figure out where it emerged from and what it entails, “black man has to
wear what white man has fabricated for him”
