Asessment principles:
Atraumatic approach (least invasive to most)

-you may assess child on caregivers lap

Anterior fontanelle: larger, closes between 12-18 months
Posterior fontanelle: smaller (finger sized), closes between 2-3 months
-sunken fontanelle = dehydrated ; bulging = increased intracranial

Eyes:
Strabismus common up to 6 months


Ears:
Top of ears should align with outer corner of eye
-low set ears may indicate genetic disorders


Nose:
Infants are obligatory nose breathers (especially under 6 months)
-small amounts of congestion can cause significant breathing difficulty


Mouth/Throat:
Tongue extrusion reflex present until 6 months
-assess for cleft palate (affects feeding)
1st teeth appear 4-6 months!
