Pre-Lab Questions
”1.
1. What is the function of the endocrine system?
system?”

The endocrine system regulates and controls various physiological processes through the
release of hormones into the bloodstream.
”2.
2. Research two types of hormones and describe the mode of action for each. ”

1. Insulin: Insulin is a peptide hormone that lowers blood glucose levels. It binds to insulin
receptors on cell surfaces, facilitating
litating glucose uptake and storage in cells, reducing blood
glucose levels.

2. Testosterone: Testosterone is a steroid hormone. It enters cells and binds to specific
receptors in the nucleus, affecting gene expression. It promotes male sexual characteristics
and plays a role in muscle growth and bone density regulation.
”3.
3. Which gland is both endocrine and exocrine? ”

pancreas
”4.
4. Which hormones control the fight or flight response? ”

Epinephrine,, norepinephrine, and cortiso
”5.
5. What is type 1 diabetes and what is the treatment for this disease? ”

Type 1 diabetes is when the pancreas does not produce insulin or produces very little.
Treatment for this disease is insulin therapy, and monitoring blood sugar levels through
appropriate diet and exercise.
”6. Describe how Ca2+ levels in the blood are regulated by hormones. ”

When blood calcium levels
evels decrease, parathyroid hormone (PTH) is released, stimulating the
release of calcium from bones and increasing calcium absorption from the intestines and
reabsorption from the kidneys. When blood calcium levels rise, calcitonin is released,
promoting calcium deposition in bones and reducing calcium absorption and reabsorption.
These hormones help maintain calcium homeostasis.
”7. How do the nervous and endocrine systems work together to maintain homeostasis of the body? ”

The nervous and endocrine systems work together to maintain homeostasis by coordinating
and regulating the body's physiological processes. The nervous system sends rapid electrical
signals (nerve impulses) to control immediate responses, while the endocrine system releases
hormones into the bloodstream to regulate slower, long-term processes. They communicate
through feedback loops, where the endocrine system can modulate the nervous system's

response, and the nervous system can influence hormone secretion. This collaborative effort
ensures that various body functions, such as temperature, blood pressure, and metabolism,
remain within optimal ranges for the body's proper functioning.
Experiment 1: Microscopic Anatomy of the Endocrine System
Table 2: Experiment 1 Image Observations

Image Type Image Observations

The
he thyroid gland at 100X you can observe an abundance of densely
Thyroid Gland packed follicles. In the 1000x you can make out the colloid that is
surrounded by the follicular cells.

In the image at 100x you can see the thyroid follicles are more
Parathyroid Gland spreadout, where the parathyroid gland is one big cluster. At 1000x
there are blue dots that can be seen throughout the slide

At 100x you can make out the intralobular ducts and the areas that
Pancreas appear to have a concentration of sspecs.
pecs. At 1000x there are many
blue dots

At 100x you can observe the peripheral cortex areas as well as the
Adrenal Gland medulla. At 1000x the capillary permeation is visible along with the
zona fasciculata that form in rows

I observed the pars intermedia separating the anterior pituitary and
Pituitary Gland the posterior pituitary

Anterior Pituitary Cells gather in clusters with vascular canals surrounding the clusters.

Post-Lab Questions
”1. Label the items in the following slide images based on your observations. ”

A- colloid
