A KISS BEFORE DYING – Schrijver Ira Levin
Part 1: Dorothy.
1:
Starts off with Dorothy crying. She’s almost 2 months pregnant. They
don’t know what to do. Dorothy grew up in a rich family. The father
of the baby didn’t and needs money. ‘Dorrie’ wants to get married
because of the baby but he doesn’t. He wants to get pills for Dorrie
to get rid of the baby. They both share a cigarette.
2: (past)
He was born in Menasset. An only child. He got good grades in
school. After graduating he was drafted. He received a discharge in
January of 1947 and left the army. Returning home, he found out
that his father had been killed in a car accident. He got a few jobs
when living in New York, 6 jobs in 5 months. September, he tried to
become an actor. December, 22nd birthday. He had a short
relationship with an older rich woman. After this ended he decided to
attend college. He chose the Stoddard University in Blue River, Iowa.
In his sophomore year he met Dorothy Kingship.
3:
He got the pills for Dorrie. He’s not sure if they will work. Dorothy
has two sisters, Ellen and Marion. [ (flashback) After the divorce
between Leo Kingship (father) and his wife (mother) when a year
later their mother died Marion grew apart as the years passed. Ellen
and Dorothy stuck together. But Ellen thought that Dorothy had to
become more self-reliant. They went to different colleges. This past
Christmas they had an small argument that had led to them barely
speaking each other. ] Letters faded into small notes. If the pills
didn’t work they will be getting married, Dorrie liked that idea.
4:
Dorothy came to class looking horrible after having taken the pills.
They would get married on Friday. He is getting stressed and doesn’t
want the baby and marry her. He’s thinking about killing Dorothy. It
would have to look like an accident or suicide. Friday would be the
deadline.

, 5:
He reached the campus and went directly to the library. He made a
list of five toxic chemicals. He got another manual at the College of
Pharmacy. A girl opened the supply room for him. After having a
small talk the girl left the room and he was alone. He fills the 2
folded into each other envelopes with White Arsenic, the poisonous
powder he needed. He also took 6 empty gelatine capsules, and
filled his 3rd envelope. He left the campus. -
He met Dorothy at 8 o’clock, they went to the Uptown. They watched
a movie. When he got home he made the capsules.

6:
He treats Dorothy really good because he’s conscious that this would
her last such experience. They go out to eat. He asks Dorothy for his
picture back, lying that he needed it for a copy. They put on ‘On Top
Of Old Smoky’ on the jukebox. He burns the edged off of the
photograph, which he had written ‘To Dorrie with all my love’ on.
7:
In Spanish class, he asks Dorothy to translate a Spanish sentence for
him, and so she does. She hands a paper with the translation that
says:
Darling,
I hope you will forgive me for the unhappiness that I will cause.
There’s nothing else that I can do.
He saves the paper. He calls Dorothy later that night to meet him at
the restaurant they ate at last night.
He looked up Ellen’s address earlier that day at the Student Union
Lounge. He stamped the envelope with her address and put
Dorothy’s note with the translation in it. The other envelope
contained the two capsules.
