Ch 3, Section 1— (Worth 10 points)
Directions: You are to answer the following:
1. REFLECT: If you had to choose five environmental influences to publicize in a campaign aimed at promoting
healthy prenatal development, which ones would you choose, and why? (Worth 5 points)
a. Name: Prescription and Nonprescription Drugs
i. Why? Pregnant women should consult with their doctor before taking any prescription or
over-the-counter medications. Some medications may have negative effects on the fetus.
b. Name: Tobacco
i. Why? Smoking tobacco during pregnancy is known to cause low birth weight and
prematurity. The likelihood of other severe consequences increases as well if women persist
in smoking during pregnancy. Passive smoking, or second-hand smoke, also increases risk
of negative effects on the fetus.
c. Name: Alcohol
i. Why? If women drink alcohol during pregnancy, the baby may be born with fetal alcohol
spectrum disorder. This can cause a wide variety of issues for the child throughout their life
including physical and behavioral abnormalities.
d. Name: Radiation
i. Why? Radiation can cause harm to the baby if a mother is exposed during pregnancy. This
may include physical deformities, slow physical growth, brain, increased likelihood of
childhood cancer, low IQ, and language and emotional disorders. Women should avoid X-
rays during pregnancy, and any other type of radiation exposure.
e. Name: Environmental Pollution
i. Why? Exposure of environmental pollution during pregnancy can impair prenatal
development and increase the likelihood of diseases and other health problems for the baby
later on. Women should avoid traffic-related fumes, smog, and any other environmental
pollution during pregnancy.

, summary needs to be a 1/3 page (7-10 sentences), double-spaced with paragraphs summary (maintain the original font
size as the assignment) and your suggestions need to be listed as 1, 2, 3, etc. (with a minimum of 5 given).
Begin Summary Here: (Worth 4 points)
Often low-income, ethnic minority expectant mothers are less likely to seek out prenatal care due to
negative experiences with health care providers. They feel that they experience lower-quality health care. Many of
these expectant mothers report that the provider-patient communication is inadequate, and they are treated as just
another number instead of a person. These mothers noticed that the doctors and nurses seemed more focused on
completing the checklists, rather than developing a caring doctor-patient relationship. Another concern of ethnic
minority mothers is the lack of culturally sensitive care. Hispanic mothers have reported difficulties with prenatal
care due to language barriers and fears of their immigrant status being affected. They noticed the lack of empathy
among healthcare providers towards them and suggested that the presence of Spanish-speaking healthcare workers
would be helpful. Cultural competency is important to the healthcare industry and would greatly help ethnic
minority, expectant mothers.
Suggestions: (Worth 1 point)
#1. Cultural competency – don’t make assumptions or behave disrespectfully
#2. Treat all patients equally
#3. More empathy and compassion towards patients
#4. Patience – slow down and take time to develop relationships with patients. We are people, not numbers.
#5. More health care workers that speak different languages
