NOTE 1 – PAST SIMPLE & PRESENT PERFECT
Past Simple
Form = verb-ed or 2nd row irregular verbs, eg I walked, he sang
Use = something happened in the past, finished, over and done with
Signal words = yesterday, ago, last, when/then, in 2001, in the old days
Example = I ate chips yesterday
Last week Sue started her new job
Present Perfect
Form = have/has + past participle = -ed/3rd row irregular verbs, eg I have
walked, he has sung
Use = something started in the past and still goes on today/now + the
effect of something is noticeable now
Signal words = for, since, just, so far, still, yet (never, ever, lately,
recently)
Example = My parents have lived here for 30 years (still live there)
It has (just) rained (effect = wet streets)
