Biological consequences of smoking:
Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, and at least 69 of them are carcinogens
(substances that actively cause cancer). Smoking can cause cancer throughout the entire
body—including the mouth, throat, stomach, kidneys, and bladder etc
Different toxic Compounds in tobacco smoke:
Tar: This solid, sticky substance damages the lung tissues, stains the teeth and fingers and
makes the body to overprduce the mucus and phlegm.
Nicotine:This is the chemical that addicts the smokers. It badly effects the circulatory
system. It narrows blood vessels, damages muscles and increases blood pressure. It
increses platelets stickiness in blood thus causing blockage in coronary artries.
Carbon Monoxide : When inhaled, this toxic gas binds with RBCs and decreases oxygen
transportation. This leaves the body's organs deficient of oxygen while causing
inflammation in the airways.
Chemicals & Heavy Metals : Cigarettes deliver a cocktail of everyday poisons and metals
into the bloodstream.
Benzene causes leukemia/blood cancer), formaldehyde cause respiratory, skin and
gastrointestinal problems. Toxic metals are also found like lead, arsenic, and cadmium
acting as carcinogens.
Respiratory Disorders:
1. Bronchitis
What it is: Swelling (inflammation) of the lining of bronchi and bronchioles. Mucus builds
up in the airways, making it harder for air to flow smoothly.
Causes: Viruses, bacteria, or irritating particles.
Treatment: Mild cases clear up on their own in about two weeks. Bacterial cases need
antibiotics, while viral cases may require anti-viral medicines.
2. Emphysema
