One should always recognize both their strengths and their weaknesses in order to be a
great leader. Recognizing both enables you to continue to learn and grow. One position that is in
the leadership role is the nurse manager and every nurse has the ability to become a great nurse
manager. They are critical to the influence of a safe work environment as well as the use of
evidence based practices. “Of every leadership role in health care today, a nurse manager has
the most direct impact on the care and services that patients and families require throughout
their health care experience” (NMLP, 2008). Regarding this leadership role, there has been a
tool that captures the behavior and skills for being a successful nurse manager. “This inventory
permits a nurse manager to carry out a kind of self-evaluation which can be well paired up with
the manager’s supervisor’s assessment of creating an individual development professional plan”
(Upenieks & Valdam, 2003).
Using the "Nurse Manager Skills Inventory", I have been able to evaluate my skills as a
nurse manager. Regarding the area of Personal and Professional Accountability, I would say that
I am between a novice and competent. I currently am pursuing my BSN with the intention to
continue on even further. I have several certifications that I keep up with and I also am involved
with a professional association. Each year I complete my yearly goal that I set and aim toward
exceeding that year’s expectation. I take my personal and professional accountability seriously
and take great pride in my work ethic. When it comes to Career Planning, I know my role as a
nurse very well. I understand my job requirements as well as goals for my profession in the
future. I have a plan for the future which includes furthering my education as well as developing
my skills even further. One goal in for example would be to gain my CEN.
Personal Journey Disciplines enable me to share knowledge and skills with those around
me. This will area I am building with enabling me to develop my strengths as a leader.
