Drug Cards for Cynthia Bennet


Name of Drug: Clonidine

Classification: ➢ Adrenergics (centrally acting)

What Is It Used ➢ Decreased BP
For? ➢ Decreased pain
➢ Improvement in ADHD symptoms

Dosages: ➢ PO (adults and adolescents >12 yr) 100 mcg twice daily
➢ PO (geriatric patients) 100 mcg
➢ PO (children) 5-10 mcg/kg/day divided into 2 or 3 doses
➢ PO (neonates) 0.5 – 1 mcg/kg/dose every 4-6 hr

Side/Adverse ➢ AV block, bradycardia, hypotension, palpitations, rash,
Effects: sweating, sodium retention, dry eyes, dry mouth, constipation,
nausea, vomiting, erectile dysfunction, decreased fertility,
weight gain, drowsiness, depression, dizziness, hallucinations,
nervousness,
nightmares, paresthesia
Contraindications: ➢ Hypersensitivity
➢ Epidural – injection site infection, anticoagulant therapy,
or bleeding problems

Client Education: ➢ Instruct patient to take clonidine at the same time each day,
even if feeling well
➢ Advise patient to make sure enough medication is available for
weekends, holidays, and vacations
➢ Caution patient too avoid sudden changes in position to decrease
orthostatic hypotension
➢ If dry mouth occurs, frequent mouth rinses, good oral hygiene,
and sugarless gum or candy may decrease effect
