1. Constipation
Bulk-forming Laxatives (Psyllium)
Complications: Obstruction (it clumps)
Client education: Take with 8 ounces of water
Chronic laxative use can lead to fluid and electrolyte disturbances
Increase fiber and fluid intake.
2. Insulin
In a person shows s/s of hypoglycemia you give OJ
3. Finasteride (5-Alpha reductase inhibitor)
Uses: BPH, Hair growth
Complications: decreased libido and ejaculate volume, gynecomastia
Contraindications: Prego X (major Birth defects in male infants)
Nursing implications: Should not be handled by Prego’s
4. Sildenafil (Viagra) (Phosphodiesterase Type 5 inhibitors)
Complications: MI, Sudden death, priapism, sudden hearing loss
Contraindication: Nitroglycerine
 Nitrates can cause Fatal hypotension
5. Birth Control
Always have a pregnancy test prior to starting therapy
6. Proton Pump inhibitors: “-prazole”
Omeprazole
Complications: Pneumonia, osteoporosis, fracture, rebound hyperacid secretion, hypomagnesemia,
C. dif
7. Prednisone
Complications: risk of infection, osteoporosis, adrenal suppression, fluid retention, gastric
ulceration, GI discomfort, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia
Interactions: Digoxin because of hypokalemia
8. Tetracycline
Interaction: Decreases the efficacy of oral contraceptives
Client Education: Use an alternative form of birth control
9. Isoniazid (Antimycobacterial)
 First line of defense
Complications: Peripheral neuropathy, hepatotoxicity, hyperglycemia
Interactions: Tyramine, rifampin, pyrazinamide increases the risk for hepatotoxicity
Nursing Implications: Monitor Liver enzymes
10. Venlafaxine (Efexor)
 If given an Extended Release do not crush
 If unable to swallow pill obtain an order for other form
11. Cisplatin (Alkylating Agents)
-Platinum Compounds
Nursing implications: Administer ondansetron for nausea
o Zofran calms both the vomiting & drug centers of the brain to
prevent vomiting

Peak: taken ½ hr after med is first given. It is when the level of the drug in the client’s body is the
highest.
Trough: is drawn immediate before the next dose of the drug is administered. It is the lowest
concentration reached by a drug.
15. Erythropoietic Growth Factors
Epoetin Alpha: Erythropoietin
• Complications: Hypertension, thrombotic event, deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), headache, body
aches
16. Iron

Client education:

 Do not take with milk or 1hr of antacid
 Constipation
 Take on an empty stomach
 Vit. C enhances absorption
 Stool turns green-black
 Take liquid form with a straw
17. Glipizide (Sulfonylureas)
 Do not take if allergic to Sulfonamides
 Hold medication if new order before clarifying with provider
18. Levothyroxine
 S/S of over medication (Thyrotoxicosis): Tachycardia
