1. Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe (1719)
304 pages

The book is about a young man named Robinson Crusoe, who dreams of going on sea voyages. His
father doesn't not approve it, but Robinson wants to make his own decisions. He sets out on an
adventure that is to change his life. It is a disastrous journey and the ship is attacked by Turkish
pirates. Crusoe is taken as a slave. After two years of slavery, he escapes and lands on an lonely,
uninhabited island. The rest of the book is about the life of Crusoe on the island. He survives there
for 27 seven years. While on the island, he finds a human foot print which is not his, and he discovers
that it's a footprint of a cannibal barbarian. He even witnesses a human sacrifice.
Robinson rescues the anxious man and names him ‘Friday’, because he saved him on a Friday.
He teaches him to speak English and after a little while Friday becomes a great companion to Crusoe.
Robinson spies a ship and learns that there is mutiny on board. Crusoe and Friday rescue the captain
and two other men. Which regained control of the ship again. The grateful captain gave Crusoe gifts
and took him and Friday back to England.

2. Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist (1838)
490 pages

Oliver is born in a workhouse in a small town near London in the early part of the 19th century. His
mother dies right after giving birth to him, and he is sent to an orphanage. When he turns nine, he
has to start working and he is sent to a workhouse, where he and the others are treated terribly and
fed very little. When Oliver asks for more food he is sent away with a coffin-maker.
Oliver gets in trouble there and after being abused some more decides to set out for London on
foot. It is not great there either, and after an argument, Oliver runs away.
He falls into wrong hands and is wrongfully accused of pick pocketing a gentleman. He comes under
the protection of Mr Brownlow, but one day he is kidnapped by the gang of thieves. He is forced to
burgle the house of Mrs Maylie and Rose, but as soon as he gets in he is shot by one of the
servants. Mrs Maylie and her niece Rose, decide to protect him from the police and nurse him back
to health. In the end Oliver is adopted by Mr Brownlow and they live next door to the Maylies and
the end up living in peace and comfort in the English countryside.
