Skill-based Lesson Plan: Listening Skill
Lesson Topic: A short clip from a film – Mean Girls.
Lead-in Ss-Ss (G/W) 5 mins
Put students into small groups and assign a group leader for each group.
Share your favourite film with the students and why you like it.
Within their groups, ask students to engage in a brief discussion about their favourite movie, they
should talk about the movie and why they like it.
Have group leaders actively oversee and facilitate discussions within their groups, ensuring that all
members actively participate.
Pre-teach Vocabulary. Ss-Ss (G/W) 15 mins
Give a list of selected words from the movie clip necessary for students to understand the listen
passage to the group leaders to share with their group members.
Have each group discuss the meanings, form and pronunciation of these words based on their
existing knowledge.
Students who are familiar with some of the words should assist their group members to facilitate
peer to peer learning.
Group leaders help manage the activity, ensuring everyone participates and encouraging student-
led discussions.
Elicit responses from students to clarify and consolidate the meanings and use visual aids or
context sentences to reinforce understanding.
Predictive activity Ss-Ss (G/W) 5 mins
Inform students that they will be listening to a movie clip from "Mean Girls."
In their small groups, ask students to predict what they think they will hear in the upcoming clip
from "Mean Girls."
They should base their predictions on their existing knowledge, the given context, title of the movie
and make predictions on things like the genre of the movie (e.g., action or comedy)
Encourage them to discuss and have group leader note down the predictions.
Foster cross-group interaction by having each group share their predictions with the others.
Listening for gist Ss-Ss (G/W) 10 mins
Use a projector to display the clip and speakers to maintain sufficient volume for all students.
Explain to students that they will first watch the video without subtitles to get an overall
understanding.
Play the selected clip from "Mean Girls" and group leaders should ensure attentive listening from
all students.
After watching, review the student's initial prediction of the content.
In their groups, students should engage in a discussion about their overall impression of the video.
Provide a set of general questions related to the clip's overall content for each group to discuss and
answer collectively e.g., What was the clip about? What do you think about the behaviour of the
girls?
