Environment
-The area where an organism lives
- the place where an organism lives together with other organisms and its surroundings such as
water, the air and the soil.
Broader meaning of THE environment: everything around you
An environment is made up of several ecosystems
An ecosystem contains 2 parts:
1) A community: a living part
2) The habitat: a non-living part (SSWAT: sunlight, soil, water, air and temperature)
Examples of ecosystems in Holland:
- A city
- The Wadden Sea
- Hiethland (= heide, zoals bijvoorbeeld de Hoge Veluwe)
About the Wadden Sea (= Wadden Zee):
It is a unique area in the world. More than 250 sorts of plants live here and nowhere else.
Predators in Wadden Sea: common seal and the grey seal
Preys in Wadden Sea: young fish and mollucs (= weekdieren, zoals slakken)
Population:
A group of organisms that live together (group of ducks, group of humans etc)
Populations of organisms live together in each community (“group”)
Populations of earthworms, ants and grass in your garden for example. Or a population of birds at the
beach.
Predation:
That is when an organism is hunted by another organism for food.
Predator: (= roofdier)
An animal that hunts other animals for food
Prey: (= slachtoffer)
The hunted animal
